Attack on Turkey is attack on NATO: Erdogan adviser

October 1, 2012

Turkey's parliament has ratified a resolution authorizing military force against Syria for a period of one year, the pan-Arab Al-Sharq al-Awsat newspaper reported on Friday.

Meanwhile, official Turkish sources told the paper that the Turkish military fired across the Syrian border only after receiving fire from the other side. The action was meant to preserve Turkey's sovereignty, not to provoke a war with Syria, said Ibrahim Kalin, a senior adviser to Prime Minister Recep Erdogan.
"The mandate given to the Turkish government does not mean that Turkey will attack Syria today or tomorrow," said Irshad Hormuzlu, also an adviser to Erdogan. "Turkey does not want to be drawn in to conflicts and wars," he added.

"The Syrian government should realize that any attack on the Turkish border is an attack on the southern border of NATO," Hormuzlu said, adding that the military will not hesitate to resume operations in the event of any further security breach.

Hezbollah security commander reportedly killed by FSA

A Hezbollah commander and two of the Lebanese militia's soldiers were reportedly killed in clashes with the Free Syrian Army outside Homs. The Arabic article is here, and describes the role of Ali Hussein Naseef as "in charge of military security missions, including finding people wanted by Hezbollah."

Naseef and the two Hezbollah soldiers were killed in Syria, outside Homs, when a rocket fired by the Free Syrian Army (FSA) landed on the building where they were staying, according to the FSA and Lebanese sources in the Bekaa Valley, where the three were later buried.

Homs women form militia

A female-only militia called "Women of al-Waleed" in Homs has announced its formation via a YouTube video. The 11 women, dressed in black with their faces covered, read their mission statement from a laptop. It includes caring for the wounded and displaced, exposing Assad's crimes to the world and providing weapons training, so citizens can defend themselves against Assad's thugs.

The militia will also work "to stop continuous operations against the Syrian people by the shabiha, Iranian mercenaries and elements from Hezbollah, all of whom are active despite the presence of international monitors."

Failed doctors' strike

A doctors' strike in Egypt is set to conclude without any of the demands of the 35,000 medical professionals in 540 state-run hospitals being addressed.

Dr. Khairy Dayim, the head of the doctors' union, told Al-Masry Al-Youm that he spoke with Health Minister Mohammed Mustafa regarding the strike and was told by the official: "I've done all that I can and there's nothing more I can do."

Dayim told the paper that he replied, "Doctors are striking and we want a solution," to which the minister said, "A strike is fine with me and I have no problem with it."

The two-week strike will conclude this Thursday in order for doctors to dispense medication to their patients.

"The purpose of the strike is to bring resolution to the financial demands of doctors and medical professionals by introducing a law to protect their interests," Dayim told the Egyptian daily.
