ANTAKYA, Turkey — Expanded U.S. aid for Syrian rebels being hinted at this week could help counter Islamist influence on the opposition, say rebels hoping the help turns out to be more than just talk.

"There are some moderate and more liberal brigades in the main structure of the Free Syrian Army. They really need help to speed up the fall of the regime," said Hozan Ibrahim, a Syrian anti-regime activist based in Berlin. "The rebels need to win control of Damascus, they just need a little help to do so."
