Tolkun has been working as a journalist since 1982, starting out her career with the Kyrgyz National Television and Radio Corporation. She has worked for the film magazine Ekran and national newspaper Slovo Kyrgyzstana as well as The Washington Times, Deutsche Welle, AFP, RIA Novosti and Radio Free Liberty. Originally from Osh, Tolkun now lives in Bishkek and speaks Kyrgyz, Russian, Ukrainian, Turkish and English.
