BAGHDAD — Omer Al Juburi could have left Tikrit a few weeks ago, but he stayed because he didn't want to abandon his home and grocery store or force his wife and three children to become refugees.

He's been trapped, as Iraqi Shiite militias and government forces wage a pitched battle to wrest back control of Saddam Hussein's hometown from the radical Islamic State group.
